Common Sense

We have a small part of our family room fenced off so JB can't get to it. Behind the fence is our entertainment center (VCR, DVD, game system etc.) and the fireplace hearth which is raised. Sitting on the hearth is our finch cage. JB is fascinated by Mr. Finch. She often goes to the fence and watches him.

Recently JB figured out she could lean on the fence and move it. Taking advantage of this new skill, she went to visit Mr. Finch and pulled his feeder off the cage - scattering his seed all over the hearth and floor. I swept up the seeds, replaced and refilled the feeder only to have JB repeat the performance a few hours later. Not Cool.

Since JB won't leave the fence alone, I figured I had to find a way to secure it so she can't move it aside. Using nylon knee high socks, I tied the fence to a console table near the hearth. Ha! Victory is mine!! Quite satisfied with my cunning method for defeating the evil plans of my 18 month old daughter I went about living life for the next day and a half. In the back of my mind I did take note of the fact that the other end of the fence is not secured, rather is just tucked against the wall and entertainment system, but figured she is focused on the bird end of the fence so I'd be safe.

JB was not. happy. to find that the fence was tied and thus immoveable. Being of strong mind (and a devotee to the belief that you can't keep a good toddler down) she directed her attentions toward learning new tricks; like how to stand on the seat of her Barbie quad, stealing the wireless mouse, and signing onto media net via my cell phone.

This morning I was browsing the internet when I noticed a suspicious quiet in the room. I looked around for JB, and sure enough there she was, behind the fence standing on the hearth peering down at Mr. Finch. Sure enough she figured out that the opposite end of the fence can be moved out, and once it has been moved she can walk the length of the room to the hearth. Three times I have removed her from the hearth this morning. I searched for a way to secure the fence and the best I could come up with was to wedge her music table between the sofa and the fence, but she figured that one out easily.

It really amazes me how she uses common sense to solve problems as they crop up. She does it over and over. I'm glad she's got it, but does she have to apply it to me??!!!

At least Mr. Finch is still relatively safe in his cage. Our cats were fascinated, and then horrified by Will as she became more and more mobile. Now one of them only gets close when she has treats to give out, other than that he's gone!
